Why One-Sided Research can be Misleading…
Over the last 100 years,it is true that researchers and scientists have made groundbreaking discoveries of new compounds, drugs and life-saving technological advance ments that have made previously untreatable diseases treatable. And every week it seems new research highlights amazing health benefits of some compound or other found in a food or herb.
Given the frantic pace of modern life, people are always looking for shortcuts to reach where they want to be. They fantasize that one magic pill or herb can fix all their existing problems. So, when this kind of research is published, people instantly have a one-sided approach to the findings. They start thinking that if they will take this “XYZ” herb or super food all their health problems will be fixed.
Let’s take a look at a case study-
A study was published some time ago stating that gooseberry has flavones and anthocyanin, which are medicinal compounds and are used to fight cancer, inflammation, aging, and neurological disease. Known as amla in India, is also very healthy for your liver and kidney and is used to make some of the medicines in Ayurveda, mainly because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Now many people, after reading the research will start taking gooseberry and think this will cure their health problems just like the research mentioned it would, but they forget that there is more to the story, and in this case, gooseberry will help the cause but will not simply cure the disease.
Many people live with this misconception for a while, until they realize that the specific herb or food has not done anything significant for them and so they proceed to the next latest research and so on. Similarly, fish oil is good for your brain, so people take it to treat their neurological problems; Iodine is good for your thyroid, so they increase their intake to treat their thyroid. All these measures are good, but they are not the treatment for your disease.
Unfortunately, discovering all this information on the internet, people think that they can cure themselves, trying things in an ad-hoc manner and not going to a Doctor or health care practitioner for advice.
The Ayurvedic approach is systematic and holistic – diagnosis and treatment of your health concerns involves a deep examination of your current lifestyle, habits, diet, work, relationships and exercise as well as determining your dosha type and imbalances through pulse diagnosis and other techniques.
