Maximising Wellness Through Ayurveda

The popular concept of wellness is to be told after a medical checkup that there is nothing wrong with you. The Ayurvedic parameters for measuring wellness, however, are far broader, taking into account not only the physical but also all the mental and spiritual factors that constitute good health. The seeds of illness are not sown overnight, neither is good health achieved in a day, but an Ayurvedic treatment plan can supply all the tools you could ever need for maximising wellness.

Ayurveda recognises that optimum wellness depends upon a balance of all three doshas – if Vata, Pitta and Kapha are not in good balance it is impossible to feel completely well. An Ayurvedic treatment plan for maximising wellness focuses strongly on this balance, and it achieves its aims in a number of ways. Lifestyle changes are of prime importance as, for example, bad habits with regard to eating and sleeping times have a serious impact on health. Diet must also be planned according to the constitution of the individual. Naturally it is not always possible to maintain a perfect diet, for example when one is obliged to be sociable it might be necessary to succumb briefly to some less than healthy eating. On such occasions Ayurveda can supply us with some useful tips with regard to antidotes, such as a cup of Ayurvedic tea to neutralise the ill effects when arriving back home.

Ayurvedic treatment includes many medicines which address rejuvenation, hormone balance and gut health. These will be selected strictly according to individual needs. A further part of the program will be the provision of an individualised yoga program. This will normally take about 20 minutes each day and can be modified according to individual circumstances. Meditation practices are included to help balance the mental state and exercises provided which will increase energy.

Why should such a program be desirable when nothing appears to be wrong? I recall asking a neighbour whose house always looked immaculate why he constantly seemed to be employing builders, decorators and all manner of tradesmen to do jobs in the house. He told me that it was only immaculate because he took the trouble to maintain it before anything appeared to need doing. So it is with maintaining good health. On the other hand, there are many people who take supplements all the time as a sort of insurance but they are not sure what they should really be taking or why. The maximising wellness program takes care of all of these things.
