Ayurvedic Treatment of Emphysema
Emphysema is a progressive condition in which the walls of the small air sacs in the lungs become damaged, causing a gradual collapse of the small airways in the lungs and obstructing the air flow. The symptoms of emphysema are as a result of this obstruction causing air to be trapped in the lungs, making breathing difficult. There is also a reduction in the number of capillaries within the air sacs which makes it harder for oxygen to enter the bloodstream, and fatigue is the inevitable result. Sufferers of emphysema are often unable to walk any distance without becoming breathless. Having to deal with emphysema symptoms can greatly reduce quality of life.
By far one of the greatest emphysema causes is smoking, although in some cases the condition can be brought on by repeated exposure to atmospheric pollution or inhaled chemicals. Long term exposure causes an inflammatory response which accelerates the breakdown of the tissues.
Ayurvedic emphysema treatment first focuses on pacifying Vata and on encouraging the production of good mucus to fill the spaces in the airways, as when good mucus decreases the resulting cavities fill with excess air and inflammation starts. Diet is of the utmost importance in this respect and light, dry and cold items need to be avoided as they tend to aggravate Vata. Certain foods, for example tomatoes, oranges and pineapple can worsen the emphysema symptoms. A sufferer whose nose is already streaming with mucus and whose throat is blocked with phlegm might wonder why further mucus production should be encouraged. The fact is that while the immune system response has been to produce more mucus this is of poor quality. The best way to encourage good mucus production is through diet.
Medicines commonly prescribed for relief of symptoms of emphysema, such as steroids, have no long-term benefit and are as a rule purely anti-inflammatory in action. They also carry the risk of severe side-effects. Ayurvedic medicines work very differently in emphysema treatment, each focusing on a different aspect of the problem, for example:
- Reducing infection and inflammation in the lungs
- Soothing the mucus lining of the airways
- Strengthening the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract
- Enabling the repair of the lung tissue to regain elasticity
- Strengthening the immune system
Exercises may be suggested with a view to improving the digestion but this is not a good time for yoga or pranayama practice.
