Blocked Ear Pain | Middle or Inner Ear Infection Treatment

Although anybody can develop an ear infection, either middle ear infection or inner ear infection, about 75% of cases affect children under 10, and the majority of those are between 6 -15 months of age.

Ayurveda distinguishes between the different types of ear infection as being caused by the aggravation of any of the three doshas, and the symptoms will vary accordingly. In the case of glue ear (chronic blocked ear) the cause is seen to be aggravation of Kapha, but when there is ear pain this is attributed to Vata aggravation. Kapha aggravation may also result in fungal Infections which may cause crusting or oozing. When there is bleeding Pitta is seen to be aggravated.

Ayurvedic ear infection treatment consists of both internal and external preparations. Sariwa and Asafoetida are two herbs that can be very effective when taken as a medicine. Ayurveda also has many effective ear massage oils, generally in a sesame oil base. These can be used as part of a daily hygiene routine to maintain ear health. Other useful treatments include the breathing exercise Nadishodhana Pranayama (see Yoga Books ‘Yatan Yoga’).

If the ear infection is severe an ENT specialist should be consulted. It can be dangerous to put anything into the ears – even oils – without medical advice.
