Ayurvedic Treatment For Halitosis
Halitosis, or bad breath, is caused by a biofilm which collects in the mouth. It is produced by a variety of different bacteria and creates a coating – white, yellow or some other colour – inside the mouth or on the tongue.
This film oxidises and produces sulphur, which results in the bad breath. While the biofilm initially comes from the digestive tract, the toxic build-up inside the mouth will inevitably be swallowed and so return to the gut, creating a chicken and egg situation in which toxicity is carried to and fro.
Ayurvedic treatment for halitosis focuses strongly on diet. Certain foods, particularly sugar, starchy items and milk products greatly aggravate the situation, sometimes creating a biofilm within minutes. Foods which can be beneficial include all bitter vegetables, and green or black tea without any sugar or milk added can be recommended. It is important to detoxify the colon regularly with the help of medicines and enemas. Some yoga practice can also be very helpful, for example ‘external breathing retention’ (refer to Yoga Book ” Yatan Yoga Therapy, p.221, No.9″)
Halitosis is not just an embarrassment – it is a call for help from the digestive system which can be a warning of serious illness in the future if it is left unheeded.
