Children Bed Wetting at age 6 | Adults Wetting the Bed Treatment
Bedwetting in children is common, but the age at which children finally have dry nights varies greatly. While some are already dry by the age of three bed wetting is still considered normal under the age of five and even bed wetting at age 6 to 10 is seen in as many as one in twenty children. Possible causes include an overactive bladder or excessively deep sleep; in many cases the child actually dreams that they are using the toilet and only wakes up when they feel the wet sensation against their skin.
Whatever the cause of wetting the bed, this is a case of misalignment of the brain-bladder connection, and one way to address this which is often found helpful is to train the child in auto-suggestion. They can be shown how to perform a type of mantra before going to sleep, thinking to themselves 11 times – “When my body needs to go to the toilet I will open my eyes”.
The parent also needs to be aware of foods that might give rise to bed wetting. It has been found to happen more frequently when there is a high intake of sugar and I have personally observed that, for example, children who consume Nutella in large quantities are prone to the problem. This is hardly surprising as refined sugar is now known to put a heavy load on the developing renal system. Sugary drinks before bed are therefore also likely to create a problem, as are drinks and foods containing stimulants, such as caffeine. In fact, it is in any case not a good idea to let the child consume a lot of fluid close to bedtime. Solid and semi-solid foods are to be much preferred over liquid foods at dinner time, as are warm foods in preference to cold. Sour foods, such as tamarind, should be avoided. Helpful items include buckwheat and barley in any form, meat and roasted vegetables.
The child should be trained to go to the toilet before bed, and after doing so to wash the hands, face and feet, using warm water in the cold weather and cold water in the summer. This process helps to coordinate the nerve impulses; without this connection the child will be less aware of what is happening while they are asleep and are more prone to bed wetting.
Adult bed wetting – In the case of a weak bladder the problem can either be systemic or local. Ayurvedic treatments can involve strengthening the vital system as a whole. In adults a weak bladder or bedwetting is frequently associated with inadequacy of the reproductive system and a weakness of semen.
In nearly every case the problem of the bedwetting child will eventually resolve itself, but attention to diet and regular daily habits will greatly speed up the process.
