One of the most unique features of a human is the face. In its structures and lines it reflects the owner’s past and future, and reveals their nature, habits, inclinations and attitudes, as well as their past, present and future state of physical, mental and emotional health and all these aspects can be assessed in a face reading.

When we first see a person it is responsible for our first impressions and since time immemorial it has been used as a tool for assessment.

In Ayurveda physiognomy or face reading is an important tool used to help diagnose a person’s current state of health and what the future is likely to hold for them. We can use it in yoga to estimate success in yogic practices and in astrology to foretell future health, wealth and relationships. In the Kama Sutra it is used as a measure of sexual prowess in the male or female.

The earliest records of physiognomy refer to Samudrik Shastra. Samudra was reportedly a Vedic seer who developed the study of full body analysis of which face reading is an important part. In its most complete form this involves not only the structure of the face itself, as the nose, the eyes, the hair, the chin and the neck all have something to tell.

Aristotle was one of the early great scholars of physiognomy, he hand-picked the generals for Alexander the Great by observing their lower jaw structure. More recently, Lincoln used the technique of face reading in selecting his entire cabinet, having learned it as a young lawyer.

Through years of practice I have come to realise that one cannot apply the same rules to all nationalities. I was once in Singapore, contemplating a business association with a man who had a facial characteristic that troubled me – his eyes were continually twitching while he was in conversation. In India this would have been a clear sign that he was not to be trusted. In fact, he turned out to be one of the best associates I have ever met.
