Background and Philosophy

The Origins Of Our Centre

Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre was established in Sydney in the year 2000 when Raman Das Mahatyagi, its founder, first came to Australia, from India. It started as a small home clinic offering help to people with chronic health problems, but as the call for natural treatments increased, the demand for services outgrew the available facilities and in 2012 the current purpose built premises opened in Gordon, to allow room for additional staff and equipment. The new state-of-the-art Centre offers a comprehensive range of treatments under one roof.

Our Founder

Raman Das was exposed to Ayurveda from a very early age and it was a part of the fabric of his life growing up. When he was only seven years old he stayed with his grandfather, a landlord, who took responsibility for the health of many local people who had no money. His grandfather had acquired a good working knowledge of Ayurveda and was extremely successful in helping the locals overcome their health problems. Seeing so many people helped without the intervention of any conventional medicine methods, such as a doctor, greatly inspired Raman Das, and by the time he was ten years of age he himself had acquired considerable knowledge in the subject of Ayurveda. As he learned more in his school lessons about the sciences everything began to make more sense and he started to realise that in spite of being more than 3000 years old Ayurveda was actually based on sound science and generations of practical experience.

Raman Das tells of an opportunity that he had while still at school to put Ayurvedic medicine to the test for himself. He was in Class 8 at the time and still suffering from a long-standing bedwetting problem which he would not discuss with his grandfather. One day he found an Ayurvedic text book with instructions for dealing with this problem, so he went to the market and bought the appropriate remedies. He followed the instructions which came with the herbs and the problem resolved itself, never to return. Much more recently, his son who developed eczema at the age of six months and had no resolution with hydrocortisone cream, was successfully treated with the aid of Ayurvedic remedies.

In the years that followed, Raman Das associated with many Ayurvedic experts and continued to be inspired by seeing countless remarkable results. He took time to investigate the connections between Ayurvedic knowledge and our modern understanding of anatomy and physiology, and he spent a lot of time studying the chemistry of the body and of the herbs which Ayurveda uses to treat health problems. In the course of his studies he came to realise that a multi-faceted approach had a much better chance of success in attaining and maintaining good health.

This led to him developing a unique new system, which he called YATAN – an amalgam of  Yoga, Ayurveda, Tantra, Astrology and Nature. He has authored two books on this subject. It was clear to Raman Das that if Ayurveda was to be embraced by people beyond India it would have to be presented in a way which shows it to be consistent with 21st Century scientific knowledge.

Our Philosophy And Our Beliefs

Where it is necessary to treat health conditions we will only employ non-invasive treatments and natural Ayurvedic herbal preparations, which have a long history of safety and efficacy in Ayurvedic Medicine.

We look forward to bringing you all the benefits of Ayurveda on your healing journey!
